Zaandam

Holland America Line

Itinerary: Caribbean

CruiseReports Value Index = 13.9
CruiseReports Quality Rating = 9.1

Strengths:

Food was excellent • Very relaxing atmosphere • As always with Holland America, the crew is fantastic and goes out of their way to make the stay on board memorable • The ship is beautiful and very tastefully decorated • Alternative restaurant Marco Polo was a real treat • Staterooms are magnificent • Elegant ship • Artwork • Quiet sophisticated ship • Filipino staff

Weaknesses:

Breakfast and lunch times were too short • A little light on activities for anyone needing to be kept busy all the time • Shore excursions in some ports sold out too quickly

Other Observations

Suites are very large and suite guests get special treatment, i.e., French champagne in room upon embarkation, special gifts, tender priority in ports — well worth the extra price • Crew was extremely helpful to those in wheelchairs • Dining room service, while outstanding, was a bit slow • Entertainment is very good, but not great • Possibly not as equipped for children as other lines, but the children that were onboard seemed to get special attention • Organ in atrium is spectacular

Who Should Take This Cruise:

Adult couples looking to relax and get away • Older generation

Who Should Not:

Mega adventurers • Heavy duty party people • Children • Families • Young couples

Editors Comments:

The Zaandam joined the Holland America fleet in May, and it was hailed in some quarters — and criticized in others — as a clear indication that this very traditional cruise line was serious about courting a wider and younger clientele. From displays of guitars of rock icons to a year-round Caribbean cruise schedule, the ship marked a departure from Holland America’s past.

This month the Zaandam will begin its 10-day Wayfarer/Seafarer cruise itinerary round-trip from Ft. Lauderdale. Ports-of-call include for the Wayfarer cruises include Basseterre, Fort-de-France, Port of Spain, Roseau, St. John and St. Thomas and Half Moon Cay. In 2001 Willemsted and La Guaira will substitute the first two calls. The Seafarer sailing visits St. John’s, Castries, Bridgetown, Pointe-a-Pitre, St. John and St. Thomas and Nassau. Next year Kralendijk and Isla de Margarita will replace St. John’s and Bridgetown
